Irish Poker Championship 2009

Irish Poker Championship 2009

2009 - Rory Rees Brennan

Bottom line is, you can’t beat being champion of your home country”.

Rory Rees Brennan resides in Killiney, Dublin. Aged 24 he has already graduated from UCD with a degree in Commerce. During college Rory would play regular games of poker with friends. Through these games he was able to gather enough money to really enjoy college. Rory turned professional four years ago aged just 20. He’s often found grinding the tables at Boylepoker who now sponsor him. His favourite game to play is PLO. He frequents the $10/$20 and $25/$50 PLO tables on Boylepoker. To date his biggest pot won online was $30,000. Rory is friends with pro’s Eoghan O’Dea and John O’Shea. Between them, they have netted over $2,000,000 through poker. Not bad for three friends!

Rory was named champion at the IPC in January 2009. Earning €160,000 for 1st place this was Rory’s biggest live win. He battled it out for 3 days and beat Chris Dowling heads-up. Rory also features at this year’s Pokerstars Late Night Poker which airs on RTE. He is up against John O’Shea in his heat and proves there are no friends at the table as he knocks John out.

When in Galway, Rory will always drop by The Eglinton for a game. He usually picks the party nights when he knows there’ll be a few drinks! He is confident he can pick up another IPC title and will be returning to retain his title.

2006 - Kieran 'Flipper' Walsh

Kieran 'Flipper' Walsh“I, like every other poker player in Ireland have the date of the Irish Poker Championships circled on my calendar months in advance. No other event offers the same value, excitement and atmosphere. I'm proud to have won this great event before and I'm hoping I can run good and go all the way this year".

Kieran Walsh is one of Cork’s well known players. Aged 18 he came across Texas Hold’em and started playing frequently in the Macau Sporting Club. He continued playing tournaments in there and consistently reached the final table. At the same time he discovered the cash games. He started with a round-of-each game but felt he wasn’t learning much. He took some time out and played online to improve his Omaha game. He clearly picked up something as he was soon turning a tidy profit. Around this time he travelled to Dublin to play the IPC in January 2006. He came through the biggest field to date and claimed 1st place. 2006 was a good year for Kieran and he featured at many final tables around the country. His most recent win was in January of this year. He won the Celtic Poker Grand Final and the €37,000 1st prize. Kieran still plays regularly online. He seems to have found his feet playing the $100 tournaments. He has won a few of these, both freezeouts and rebuys. His biggest online win do date was qualifying for the Poker Million in 2006, netting him nearly $40,000. Kieran is always a threat at the poker tables and most people are happy to see him knocked out. Will he be the first to make it a double at the IPC in December?

2008 - Jude 'j.thaddeus' Ainsworth

“Stunning location, great value. If you’re going to play one tournament in Ireland this should be it”.

Jude Ainsworth currently lives with his wife Aisling in Claregalway, Galway. He started playing poker in a home game in 2004 with a group a friends. A year later he discovered the joys of online poker and soon replaced his friends with bigger fish. During this time he was studying Biochemistry and graduated with a PhD in 2008 and, in his own words ‘never got round to actually looking for a job’. Jude has had huge success with poker and seems to be one of the elite few who consistently win at it. His first major win was the IPC 2008 in Galway. Jude beat 287 other players to take that year’s title and €145,000 for 1st place. He has since found himself at final tables around Ireland, Europe and USA. Jude’s biggest win to date was this year’s SCOOP $10,000 Main Event on Pokerstars. The 2-day online event had 502 entrants and some of online’s best players including Chris ‘Moorman1’ Moorman, Jon ‘Pearljammer’ Turner and Chowdahead4.  No deal was made at the final table and Jude became the outright winner picking up $963,338 for his effort. This opened the floodgates for Jude and he has since topped many online tournaments.

Jude is a regular in The Eglinton Casino and despite his online success still loves to come in and play the Monster Monthly and Wednesday freezeouts. He is one of the true gentlemen of Irish poker and he’s always welcomed at the tables.

2007 - John Clancy

John Clancy

“The IPC is a well run, good structured tournament with a good prizepool and always great craic win or lose”.

John Clancy is Limerick’s IPC champion. Aged 37, John is currently a Commercial Manager in Limerick city. He is married with two children and has no doubt that they will become poker players too. John is from a family of card players and there was always a deck or two around at every family event. He has been playing card games and variations of poker for the past 20 years.

He picked up Texas Hold’em about 5 years ago, just as Pokerevents began a weekly game in Limerick. John played as much as he could and learned a lot about the game in a short space of time. He played a side event at the IPC in 2006 and came 5th. The next year he decided to give it his all for the main event. John qualified for the 2007 IPC in a last minute satellite in Limerick. He played superb poker throughout the main event and everything fell into place. He scooped the win and went home with €114,000. John was over the moon after the event.

John has kept quiet at the live poker tables but he hadn’t turned his back on the game. Instead, he chooses to play online at Mansion Poker and Full Tilt Poker. ‘Niacon’, as he is known at the online tables, has had a steady stream of wins. His largest online win has been $42,000. Enough to keep him going for a while! It’s about time John has another win at the live tables and what better place to do than the IPC.
